GetElseWear (“we”) runs the price-comparison app at app.getelsewear.com and this website, getelsewear.com. This page covers both. Questions or requests: hello@getelsewear.com.
The short version
- We keep your name, email and home country to run your account, apart from what you do in the app.
- We record what you search for, so we can show your history and learn which items travellers compare.
- We never store your IP address or your GPS location, and we don’t use advertising trackers.
- We never sell your name or email. We may share or sell shopping trends that can’t identify you.
- You can ask us for a copy of your data, or to delete it, at any time.
What we collect
Your account. Your name, email address, home country, and a password stored only as a salted, scrambled hash, never as the password itself. If you sign in with Google or Apple, see the next section.
What you search for. The tag codes you type or scan, the item we found (or that we found nothing), and the result we showed you: prices, the cheapest country and the saving. This gives you your search history and helps us improve the app.
What you tell us in the app. Prices you add from a tag, your answers to “Are you buying it?”, items you add to a trip with their prices and shop, your trip dates and the country you fly home from, and whether your tax refund arrived and how much it was.
Tag photos. When you scan a tag, the photo is read by an AI model to find the code and price. Photos chosen from your library or taken with your phone’s own camera are thrown away once read. If you’re signed in and use the app’s own camera, we may keep the cropped picture of the tag (only the frame you line the tag up in, and only if it shows nothing but a tag) to test and improve the reader. Most are deleted after a day; ones the reader got wrong are kept for up to a year.
Rough location. Our host, Cloudflare, tells us the country and city your connection seems to come from, so we can show where shoppers compare prices. We don’t store your IP address, and we never ask for your phone’s GPS location.
Your device and visits. The type of device and browser, whether the app is installed on your home screen, the site that sent you to us (or the creator’s link you followed), and which screens and buttons you use.
Payments. If you buy a pass, Stripe handles the payment on its own page. We get the pass you bought, the amount, the currency and Stripe’s reference, never your card details.
Emails you send us, and the email address, destination and travel month if you fill in “Not abroad yet?” on this website.
Signing in with Google or Apple
If you choose “Continue with Google” or “Continue with Apple”, Google or Apple tells us your name, your email address and an account number that identifies you to us. We use them only to create your GetElseWear account and sign you in, the same way as an email and password. We don’t get your Google or Apple password, and we don’t ask for access to your contacts, files, calendar or anything else. We never post anything for you.
If you use Apple’s “Hide My Email”, we only see the private address Apple gives us, and our emails reach you through Apple. We don’t share the information Google or Apple gives us with anyone, except the companies listed below that run the app for us, and we never sell it or use it for advertising.
Why we use it
- To run the app: look up prices, keep you signed in, save your history and trips, and apply the passes you bought.
- To send emails you need: password resets, and the trip emails you set up (a reminder the day before you fly, and a question about your refund afterwards).
- To keep accounts safe: limiting wrong passwords and repeated attempts, and checking new passwords against known leaked ones (we send only the first 5 characters of a scrambled version of the password, never the password).
- To improve the app: which brands and items to add, where the tag reader goes wrong, and how close our refund estimates are.
- To build data products: shopping trends such as which items travellers from one country compare in another, price changes over time, and how much tax refund travellers really get back. These are made from activity that is kept apart from names and emails, and never include them.
Who we share it with
Companies that run parts of the app for us, and only for that:
- Cloudflare: hosting, our database, photo storage, the AI model that reads tag photos, and sending our emails.
- Stripe: payments. Stripe is the seller of record for passes and handles tax, fraud checks and payment support.
- Google and Apple: sign-in, if you choose it.
- Have I Been Pwned: the leaked-password check above, which never sees your password or email.
Your browser also loads fonts from Google Fonts and product photos directly from the brands’ own image servers, so those see your connection as any website would. Beyond these, we share trends that can’t identify you (see above), and we would share information if the law required it.
Cookies and storage
We use two cookies: one that keeps you signed in (for up to 90 days) and one with a random visitor number, so a search before and after sign-up counts as the same person. Your browser also remembers small settings, such as your recent shops. There are no advertising or third-party tracking cookies.
How long we keep it
- Your account, until you ask us to delete it.
- Searches and other activity, for as long as they’re useful. Once your account is deleted, they can no longer be linked to you.
- Tag photos, as described above: most for a day, misread ones for up to a year.
- Password reset links expire after an hour. Records of wrong passwords are kept only as a scrambled version of the email and are cleared after a day.
Your choices
Email hello@getelsewear.com from the address on your account to get a copy of your data, correct it, or delete your account and the information that identifies you. We’ll reply within 30 days. You can change your home country in the app at any time.
Where it’s stored
Cloudflare and Stripe run worldwide, so your information may be handled in countries other than your own, including the United States and the EU. Connections to the app are always encrypted.
Children
GetElseWear is meant for adults travelling and shopping. It isn’t meant for children under 16, and we don’t knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top. For a big change, we’ll tell signed-in shoppers in the app or by email first.
