Tax refunds
The tag isn’t what you pay
Visitors can claim back sales tax in much of Europe and Asia, but every country has its own rate and minimum spend. ElseWear knows the rules for where you are and where you live.
- ES
21% VAT, no minimum spend. Visitors from outside the EU can claim on any purchase, one big reason Zara is so cheap in Spain.
- JP
10% tax, new system from 1 November 2026. Visitors pay the tax at the till and claim it back when they leave, so the tag won’t show your discount. ElseWear does.
- GB
No tourist refund. The UK ended tax-free shopping for visitors in 2021.
- US
Tags leave out sales tax. It’s added at the till and not refunded, so ElseWear adds the US average (7.53%). Canada works the same way, at 12.3% on average.

FAQ
Questions
Where do the prices come from?
From each brand’s own website in each country, checked every night, and converted at that day’s exchange rate. Shop prices usually match the website, but sales and local offers can differ.
Where do I find the code?
On Zara and Massimo Dutti price tags it’s the reference, like 2556/810/105. On Uniqlo it’s the six-digit item number, like 478577. Take a photo and ElseWear reads it for you, or type it in.
How is the tax refund worked out?
We take the tax included in the price and check you can claim it: you live outside that country (or outside the EU, for EU countries) and you spend the minimum in one shop. Then we take off about a quarter for the refund company’s fees. What you actually get back depends on the refund company and how you’re paid.
Why is the US price higher than the tag?
US tags leave out sales tax, which is added at the till. ElseWear adds the US average of 7.53% so you compare what you’d really pay. Your own state’s rate may be a little higher or lower.
Do I need an account?
Not for your first search. After that, a free account with your email and where you live keeps your searches and shows every price in your home currency.
Is there an iPhone or Android app?
Not yet, and you don’t need one: ElseWear works in your phone’s browser and adds to your home screen like an app. Store versions may follow.
