We compared 1,468 Aritzia items priced on both its Canadian and US websites (checked by hand, October 2026). For a US shopper, 98% were cheaper in Canada after sales tax and the exchange rate, with a typical (median) saving of 24%.
Why it’s cheaper
58% of Aritzia items show the same number on the Canadian and the US price tag: 148 in Canadian dollars in Toronto, 148 in US dollars in New York. But a Canadian dollar is worth less than a US dollar (about 1.38 Canadian dollars to the US dollar in October 2026), so the same number costs a US visitor much less.
Sales tax on both sides
- Neither country includes sales tax on the tag. We add the average to both: about 12.3% in Canada and 7.53% in the US.
- Canada’s rate depends on the province, from 5% in Alberta to 15% in most of Atlantic Canada, so Calgary and Edmonton are the cheapest places to buy.
- Canada has had no tourist tax refund since 2007, so there’s nothing to claim at the airport.
Bringing it home to the US
- After 48 hours away, each person can bring back US$800 of goods duty-free, once every 31 days.
- Back within 48 hours, the allowance is US$200, and going over it makes everything dutiable.
- Above US$800, the next US$1,000 is charged a flat 3%.
