Two examples
Sandro’s leather jacket (SHPBL01190) was €1,195 in France and US$1,905 in the US. For a US shopper that’s about US$2,048 at home with sales tax and about US$1,177 in Paris after the tax refund: 42% less.
Maje’s Miss M mini suede bag (MFASA01464) was €345 in France and £399 in the UK. For a UK shopper it works out at about £255 in Paris after the refund: 36% less.
Spend €100 in one shop
France’s refund needs €100.01 or more in one shop on one day. Most Maje, Sandro, AMI Paris, A.P.C. and Longchamp pieces pass that alone. At Zara, Mango or Uniqlo, pay for things together, or the refund doesn’t apply and the saving shrinks.
The tax refund in France
- French prices include 20% VAT. If you live outside the EU, you can claim it back.
- You need to spend €100.01 or more in one shop on one day. Ask for a tax-free form (détaxe) at the till and show your passport.
- Before you check your bags, scan each form at a PABLO kiosk at the airport. Red on the screen means take the goods and the form to the customs desk.
- Forms must be validated by the end of the third month after the month you bought.
- Refund companies keep a fee. We assume you get about three quarters of the tax back, roughly 12.5% of the price on the tag.
EU residents can’t claim the refund anywhere in the EU. UK residents can, since 2021.
